Container Organic Gardening
Article by Timothy Samuel
Container Gardening Advice, Ideas Design and, Pictures. Whether you are
getting up the nerve to try growing a few petunias, or are have a full
fledged container garden vegetable farm, you’ll find useful information here.
What you need to know to get started container gardening. Making beautiful
container gardens can be quick and easy of choosing a Container for your
garden. Five flowering plants for sun even a laundry basket can make a great
container garden. This approach dovetails nicely with my own philosophy which
I call “Slacker Container Gardening ” In a nutshell, in my container garden,
the aim is not perfection, it’s about gardening like you live and enjoying
the process. Another important tenet of “Slacker Container Gardening,” is to
keep it guilt free. I want my container gardening to be a guilt-free zone. I
will make mistakes, I’ll even make some really ugly container gardens, which
I’ll either fix or kill, but either way, it’s just a waste of time and energy
to feel guilty about it. My one request is that someone reminds me of this
philosophy in the middle of the summer, when I suddenly revert back to being
a type A, container gardener. Potting soil a lightweight potting mix is
needed for container gardening.
Gardening in containers is one of the most versatile and creative forms of
garden design. Potting mix most container gardeners have found that soilless
potting mix works best. Some helpful techniques, including choosing
containers and growing media potting mix, selecting plants, and planting,
fertilizing, and watering your container garden, are discussed in this
publication. Styrofoam peanuts can be used in the bottom of the container
rather than filling it fully with potting mix. Potting Soil A lightweight
potting mix is needed for container gardening. Media A fairly lightweight
potting mix is needed for container vegetable gardening. Most potting
mixtures become compacted and plants become root-bound over time. Organic the
ideal container medium must be porous to drain well but high enough in
organic matter to hold water, because roots require both air and water.
Packaged potting soil available at local garden centers may make a good
container medium but be sure that it is not too high in organic matter.
Organic fertilizers such as fish emulsion or blood meal can also be used if
desired, but may be available too slowly for actively growing plants, or may
develop sour aromas.
Container vegetable gardens guidelines for how to create container vegetable
gardens for those with no yard. Container vegetable gardens are another great
alternative for those that don’t have access to back yards. Soils are best
suited for vegetable container gardening. The primary keys to successfully
growing vegetables in containers are to plant them in the proper-sized
container and to keep them watered. Durability and Cost Pots that are porous
may look more natural but can deteriorate quickly if consistently exposed to
moisture and freezing temperatures. Wood are the most natural and blend into
the garden seamlessly, while stoneware provides colors to the mix, plastic is
less expansive but seemed to be odd in the natural setting.
One more thought:
Never reuse the same potting soil from the previous growing season because it
may contain disease organisms. Most municipal water systems on the Front
Range are from mountain sources which are excellent and cause few problems.
However, water from wells and much of the Western Slope is often high in
salts or carbonates which will cause some problems. Salt build-up is damaging
to plants causing burned leaf edges, stunted growth, and fewer blooms. If
saucers are used to catch drained water, empty them to prevent salt buildup.
Kerry Smith, Extension Home Horticulture Specialist, Auburn University.
Soil straight from the garden cannot be used because it will not drain fast
enough, resulting in too little air for the roots, and it pulls away from the
sides of the pot when dry. Decoration Pots of blooming petunias make the most
austere entrance or sparsely decorated balcony or deck feel warm and inviting.
Time-release fertilizer and automatic watering systems can reduce that time
even more. Carefully selecting plants will result in a beautiful, yet
functional, display with function. Doing so may cause fertilizer burn and
kill your plants. If you are away a lot, consider an automatic drip emitter
irrigation system. Do not add more than the recommended rate of any
fertilizer, since this may cause fertilizer burn and kill the plants. Just
because a little is good for the plants does not guarantee that a lot will be
better. For more tips on gardening go to http://www.Teegoes.com

“Gardening” and “Farming” what’s the difference ?!
Article by Nazima Woozeer
Gardening is the cultivation of plants for home gardens, public gardens, streets, facades and rooftops, it’s motivated by hobby rather than by economic reasons, a gardener is the person who looks after the garden he maybe the household owner covering his family needs for food from a small backyard garden or just somebody who is looking to add a beautiful landscapic view to his home, the word gardener may also refer to the garden designers.
Gardening is different from the normal cultivation(Farming) in the following points:
Gardening aims to cultivate ornamental plants like flowers, roses, shrubs and climbing plants, it’s goal is to create beautiful landscapic views as well as to provide food on a small scale but providing food is not it’s primary goal however in many countries (e.g. Russia) vegetables are cultivated in home gardens, still it’s considerd as gardening and not farming, because even when planting a crop in home gardens it will be on a small scale and not on a large scale.
Incase of normal cultivation or farming modern techniques and agricultural mechanization is used such as irrigation systems, chemical fertilizers and harvesters, on the other hand incase of gardening very simple and basic hand tools are used such as spades, baskets, hoe and watering cans.
Farming happens on a large scale, and it’s primary goal is to produce goods to be sold and consumed by humans such as food or cotton for the manufacture of clothes, on the other hand gardening is done on a much smaller scale as a hobby or to supply the gardener’s own household with goods or supplies such as vegetables or fruits.
Gardening can be considered as a hobby or a way to maximize income, while normal cultivation is only considered as a commercial activity.
Incase of gardening the production of a given unit of land can be larger than the production of the same given unit of land incase of normal cultivation or farming e.g. back in the days of the “soviet union” a large portion, nearly half of the food production came from small gardens which belonged to small beasnts, or small household gardens that belonged to normal people (not farmers).
History of gardening
Gardening has a very long history with humans, because humans have always admired the beautiful landscape, human history has always told us stories about beautiful gardens such as the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Romanian gardens, gardens of royal palaces in England and France, in addition to the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, which was considered as a way to determine how noble a japanese woman is.

Gardening is becoming a popular hob
Article by Stephanie Ly
In today’s fast pace society, the younger generation tend to be too busy for gardening and outdoor living. Most live in small apartments and even hardly see a garden patch at all. However, it is also noted that while the young are neglecting their gardening skills the abby boomers are finding time and money to invest in outdoor plants and gardening tools. Gardening has become increasingly popular over the last few years, and the use of garden equipment and tools proves this.
Baby boomers are the target for gardening tools and equipment as people in this age bracket tend to be more homey, meaning these individuals socialize less and spend more time in their homes and enjoying the sun, rain and thus their gardens. As a result, gardening has become a valuable hobby to the garden and outdoor’s industry.
For those with a large garden, gardening and planting are not the only things you need to consider. You must also consider other important factors such as cleaning and maintenance, pest control and weeds. You must make sure you have the right garden tools and equipment to maintain your garden.
Gardening doesn’t always refer to having a big area of garden patch and massive lawn. Gardening can also refer to smaller patches of yard space. Gardening in small space means you can plant in containers or even a small secluded patch area. In such cases you should choose plants carefully as there is limited area. Herbs, shrubs, vegetables, and citrus fruits can all be grown in containers. More often than not smaller garden areas and containers reflect gardening and planting as a hobby rather than chore.
For people that have smaller garden or planting areas, you can still grow your favourite plants in any type of container, such as pottery, plastic containers, clay pots and even wooden containers. It is important that your gardening containers have holes at the bottom to allow the water to drain.
With the recession affecting more and more people, there is an increasing trend for people to stay at home more in order o save money. As a direct result, activities such as gardening have become increasingly popular as a means of creating a more inviting and relaxing home environment. Gardening Design Ideas Worth Your Time
Article by Antigua Resler
Whether you are a very experienced gardener or are planning your very first garden, gardening design is something that you are going to need to think about. This will be dependent upon all sorts of things like how much space is available to you, what kinds of plants you want to have and which look you most prefer. It is important to plan this out as carefully as you possibly can because it can be hard to change the design once you’ve put it into place. Here are some of the better possibilities for designing your own gardens.
Placing a focal point or having a noticeable center is something to consider regardless of the type of garden you have. Although focal points are normally used in larger and medium sized gardens, small gardens can have also have focal points. It can be as simple as a small outdoor sculpture or more elaborate such as a trellis or fountain. This is something that people will notice when they first look at your garden. Another choice is a garden bench where people can sit and admire the garden. A central point can really add to a gardens appeal, so give it some careful thought.
An English cottage garden is a good choice for someone who likes an informal design. It’s true that English estate gardens are highly formal, but cottage gardens have a more natural and causal look to them. This is also very appropriate if you are forced to garden in a limited space because cottage gardens are very dense and make use of each and every inch of space that is available. Cottage gardens aren’t planted in any set way but most often they have lots of flowers. Roses and other pretty smelling flowers are usual choices as are herbs and edible plants. These gardens almost always seem natural and unplanned and will even feature things like climbing vines for walls and fences. It’s not hard to take the basic idea behind the English cottage garden and plant the plants that are naturally growing in your area.
Gardens can be designed for almost any space, including non-traditional ones if you have limited space or any unused area to improve its appearance. Think of planting trees or colorful flowers next to your driveway, for example. If there’s a sidewalk outside your home, you may have a space between the sidewalk and street where something could be planted. If you have any kind of path on your property, planting flowers next to it will make it more attractive. Adding these touches don’t have to replace your main garden, but can improve the environment of your home and property. Look around for creative places to plant something.
Gardening design will give you a fantastic opportunity to be creative and make a garden that is truly a work of art. It doesn’t matter if your garden is small and container based on your patio or large and spread across a yard, when you put real effort into its design, it is going to offer you a much more pleasing result. You can get inspiration by studying other garden designs but don’t forget to include a few of your own personal touches as well.

Gardening Design Easy As One, Two, Three!
Article by Annie Deakin
Garden design defined- Many people wonder what garden design exactly entails. Well, its actually a very straight forward concept consisting out of an artful process which in turn comprises of design, creation and planning precise layout of not only garden plants but also as the landscape areas self. The owner of the garden or a professional such as a landscaper can undertake a garden design project, depending on the expertise required. Even if you decide on a professional, it’s important to remember that his or her level of experience and expertise will vary from individual to individual.
Education- Most garden designers have been trained in both design and horticulture, with advanced know-how and experience on plants and their use. A Landscape Architect can also be considered part of a professional garden designer team, with formal training in the form of a degree, which includes state licensing.
Will only a pro succeed? -Its not only pro’s that succeed in garden design. Amateur gardeners also have the to potential to gain immense levels of experience, expertise and know-how from working in their own gardens. Wanna-be designers can also get necessary knowledge from either part-time or full-time study in the form of a University or College Degree in Gardening. Gardening or garden design organisations or clubs are also a very popular choice for individuals who want to learn more about gardening. These clubs include The Gardeners of America, National Garden Club or American Horticultural Society.
Increased interest in garden design- The popularity of garden design has boomed substantially in resent years specifically during the last century, not only as a mere hobby for gardening fanatics, but also as an addition to professional garden designers’ portfolio’s.
Basic principles of design- It doesn’t matter whether you are a garden designer by profession or an amateur trying your hand at something new, the basic principles of design will always remain the same if you want to ensure design effectiveness, resulting in a garden meeting the needs, goals and desires of the owner or user of the garden.
Elements of design- Essential garden design elements include, solid landscape layout such as paths, walls, water features, seating and decking; plant layout, with proper consideration to every plants individual requirements, the season, lifespan, habit in terms of growth including size and speed and lastly the combi of other plants and landscape characteristics.
Regular maintenance considerations- Regular maintenance considerations are also very important, this includes the time and costs spent to ensure the garden is properly maintained. This will have a direct impact on your plant choices, as special consideration needs to be taking in terms of plant growth speed, seeding, whether plants are annual, bi-annual or perennial, bloom-time and actual bloom duration, and numerous other factors.
Other considerations of importance- Of all the design considerations garden use is definitely regarded as the most important, desired style follows very close behind, and lastly the way the garden is intended to blend with your home or surrounding areas. Unfortunately, mentioned considerations are subject to two problems, namely budget and time limitations. Budget limitations are beaten chop-chop by a simple, basic garden design style with few and quick growing plants, inexpensive materials for landscaping and seeding instead sodding. Apart from this, garden owners can decide to design their gardens’ over an extended period, in sections, with primary focus on each individual section instead of manage all at once.

Calgary Gardening -Turn Your Calgary Vegetable Garden Into a Lovely Pottage Garden!
Article by Paul Gettis
So the old story goes that vegetable gardens are only for the production of food. In Calgary, home are being built closer and closer together, so space for a Calgary garden can be an issue as well. Combine these two factors and many Calgary Gardeners opt out of the pottage garden all together.
The pottage garden, or else know as the composite garden, combines annuals, perennials and herbs and vegetables into one. These gardens have been popular in France for many centuries. Things like parsley have always been popular for borders and thin paths laid with rustic herringbone pattern bricks pave the way for paths, allowing access to the interior of the garden.
As a Calgary gardener, I would love to see some of the concepts come to Calgary. The pottage garden is in many cases as true work of art as perennials and annuals are skillfully laid with though being put into the styles and texture of herbs and vegetables being planted within.
One good technique is to plant peas, runner beans and other climbers on an attractive trellis that you have installed in your Calgary Garden. Runner beans are attractive climbers and after blooms, tasty beans can be harvested from them. Cucumber and tall cherry can look good grown this way as well.
Ground covers can be used by white or pink flowering strawberry plants. Nothing beats the taste of a home grown strawberry! Also, for that odd corner a zucchini plant can be used as an accent to help out with your planting artistry.
Carrots along with parsnip, with their delicate and lacy foliage make attractive edging plants. They can be thinned easily without losing their effect. One other great technique in the Calgary Garden is to grow different s types of lettuce bunched in either regular groups or irregular groups and offset the green foliage with marsh marigolds. Get creative as a Calgary Gardener.
Sunny locations are a great spot for many different types of herbs and vegetables in any Calgary Garden. I like to plant tomatoes on a good sturdy support in the middle of a container surrounded by colorful plants that add character and can withstand the same hot growing conditions. Salad greens, lettuce and other edible plants can be grown in half barrels or large planters. Ruby Red lettuce can be a great addition to any spot of your Calgary garden that is cool in nature. As well, parsley and chives can also be a great border addition or a nice green accent in any garden.
Herbs are wonderful in a Calgary Garden. They have altering textures and colors that can add wonderful interest for anyone looking in. Lavender, Sage, oregano and other species of thyme can be a wonderful ground cover for anyone looking for that effect in their Calgary Garden.
Many flowering shrubs can work well in your Calgary Garden. Nanking cherry can produce great berries for producing jelly, liquors, syrup or eating fresh. Raspberry bushes, crabapples and other trees or shrubs which produce fruit can make your garden, unique attractive as well as nutritious.
Nothing is better (and tastier) than seeing fresh raspberries grow to the point that you can make your own jelly, or just pick them and eat them.
Anyways, get creative in your Calgary Garden. It may even be possible to have a beautiful pottage garden that is nearly all vegetables and herbs, with just a few ornamental plants as accents.
Paul Gettis has been a high end Calgary Gardener for many years. Paul Gettis is the owner of a Landscaping Construction company that specializes in Gardens, Ponds, Waterfalls and many other things.
