PostHeaderIcon Contemporary Bathroom Mirror

Article by Modern looking bathroom mirror

I have always been one for detail, for making sure everything is just right. I work in design so that probably has a lot to do with it. I’ve been in this job for almost five years now, and in my house for the same length of time. Yet, even after five years, there is still plenty I have yet to do. I’m very particular about what I want in my home. I like fine furnishings and nice accessories, and I’m not one to rush things! One thing that is odd is that I have a large space on a very bare wall in my bathroom. It’s there for a reason.

I had in mind one of those oval shaped large bathroom mirrors, a really neat modern looking one with all the details, but then I changed my mind and wanted a different style. Then I changed it again, and again. So, five years down the line, I’m still making do with a small portable mirror. I started looking at contemporary bathroom mirrors on the internet just recently, and have found some that I really like. I don’t really know why it’s taken me this long!

There are many choices of large bathroom mirrors to be found if you just run a search for contemporary bathroom mirrors, but me being me choosing the right one was never going to be the work of a moment. I decided against a modern lighted bathroom mirrors – too garish and over the top – and didn’t really think a white bathroom mirror was very me, but coming back to the oval bathroom mirror idea I found exactly the one for the space. It’s a beautiful model from Schon, in walnut, it cost me under 0 and it is absolutely perfect for the space.

My friends despair at my inability to make decisions quickly. Whenever we go out I’m always the one who is late. I can never decide whether to wear this dress or that, these shoes or those, and I leave everything to the last minute. Love it or hate it, but that’s me. I suppose I’m the archetypal dizzy blonde – always going somewhere but never getting there!

A good website that provides information about different varieties of contemporary bathroom mirror.

PostHeaderIcon Latest in Faucet and Cabinet Designs for Your Kitchen

Article by Kitchen@ecombuffet.com

Nothing has changed in the fact that the kitchen is the heart of any home. More so if it is connected to the dining area, the kitchen can be the busiest part of a house day in and day out. It is vital for any kitchen to be equipped with all the utensils and equipment for food preparation and cooking, so that food will come out special and out-of-love. For devoted cooks, it is frustrating not to have a rolling pin when making a pizza or a baking pan that can accommodate twenty cupcakes for a bunch of visitors.

However, as utensils are extremely important, kitchen utilities also serve essential roles in food preparation. The faucet, the counter, and the cabinet fall under this category, and without them, a kitchen plan is incomplete. These assist in the kitchen by providing a place to organize utensils, a surface to work on and a sanitary environment. Although it may be enough to have the simplest types of them around, it adds to the drive and excitement to cook if they are maintained well, or at the very best, replaced once worn out.

In the market, there is a wide array of kitchen faucet, cabinet and counter designs available that makes shopping challenging and time-consuming. Thus, before going out to the stores, it is a good practice to think and plan first; survey your kitchen and visualize the utilities that will work best with the design, appearance and other fixtures in it. Having a list of the specifications you want for each will reduce shopping time and give you focus on the ones that you should buy. Also, checking out websites and magazines will open your eyes not solely on some latest kitchen faucet designs, but also on the trendiest kitchen cabinet and counter types that are most popular.

When shopping for faucets, factors to think about are the type of handle, the finish and the features. Faucets can be single-handled or double-handled, the second allowing more comfort whether you are left-or right-hand dominant. Double-handled faucets have separate controls for hot and cold water, while single-handled ones offer easy control with one handle. Finishes for faucets are varied, including stainless steel, chrome, copper, nickel, bronze and brass. One useful feature that you may want is the pull-out sprayer, which can be a great help when washing vegetables and cleaning the entire countertop, as it allows a reach exceeding the sink area. Spout style and height are also varied, and there are additional features for convenience such as touchless controls, water purifiers and soap dispensers. In terms of cabinets, the trend has moved toward the use of invisible hinges that can be easily adjusted. Designs can be simple or grand depending on the motif being followed, but customization is still highly preferred. On the other hand, countertops are becoming modern with the use of various durable materials. Solid countertops are still in demand, and the options are more varied including acrylic, quartz, granite, and natural stone. These materials are a bit expensive, but they are worth the investment because they have longevity and resistance to elements. You can also opt for laminate countertops and cabinets, with the advantage of being resistant to scratching and scuffing, as well as having a wide variety of colors, textures, patterns and finishes. If you have a rustic taste, a butcher block countertop is perfect; it is highly durable, ages well, and can be finished and refinished to last longer, although the downside is that it requires extra maintenance. When having a kitchen renovation, it is necessary to match things out with the overall look of the kitchen. Although guidelines are loose, it is still wise to follow a certain standard, may it be color, finish or material. Because cost is a great factor, it is recommended to do the shopping yourself in home improvement shops and look for sales and discounts. Every homeowner has a mission of completing the fixtures in the house, especially in the kitchen. If you will soon do a big kitchen renovation, heeding these insights on latest and advisable specifications for faucets, cabinets and counters are sure to increase the likeability and functionality of your kitchen.

Germ collection is also a common cross of kitchens and bathrooms. Using distilled white vinegar in kitchen cleaning for cleaning cooking range, counter tops, and sink will reduce germs. In the case of bathroom, spraying it with disinfectants while doing bathroom cleaning will help. However, a most effective way for killing nestling germs is using steam-cleaning equipments for routine kitchen cleaning and bathroom cleaning.Be sure to include moping as part of your kitchen cleaning task. This should be something that you do thoroughly and frequently in order to help keep your floor looking clean and free from germs and bacteria. It is advisable for you to use floor moping detergent with hot water as this combination works best to not only kill off any tiny living bacteria on the floor, but also helps to loosen up any stuck on dirt. You can purchase a steam powered mop to really help you get the moping job done quicker.Keep kitchen counters clean and clutter free. Nearly every surface area in your kitchen has the capacity to harbor nasty bacteria that can become really unhealthy to your home environment and they can be especially bad if they are around areas where your edible foods are. And so it becomes very important that you try to maintain a daily or weekly cleaning schedule in order to keep these germs and bacteria at bay and to help you keep your kitchen looking nice and clean. Below are some of the necessary things that you should try to incorporate into your daily cleaning tasks to help you better sanitize and clean your kitchen. To clean tougher areas that build up hard stains, like the sink, use a powdered cleaner such as Ajax. The last cleaner that’s required when cleaning the kitchen is a floor cleaner. If you have linoleum, vinyl, wood or tile there are specific floor cleaners available at home appliance stores that will ensure a safe and thorough clean of your floor. Simply ask a sales associate to help you find the proper cleaner for your type of floor. They will also be able to provide you with all the necessary information you will need. The second pertains to the sometimes daunting task of cleaning the kitchen thoroughly, cleaning each and every corner from all grease and dirt. This also includes removing all dirt and grease from each of the kitchen appliances, in the sink and on the countertops.Ok, so how do we clean our oven? What kitchen cleaning supplies do we already have that will clean our oven too? Yep, you guessed it…Baking Soda! Sprinkle a box of baking soda liberally on the bottom of the oven, dampen, and let it go to work. It is a slow cleaner so give it time, over night would be perfect. No fumes, no headaches, no smell, and your next meal does not tasted like chemicals! There is a lot of work that goes into setting up your first home, and it is fairly costly as well. To save some money and ensure you have the basics, here is a little advice on choosing some basic kitchen cleaning supplies. When the food spills on the surface of the oven, usually it starts burning and leaves a harsh stain of burnt food. Sprinkle some salt on the surface of the affected area and add some cinnamon if required to reduce the unpleasant odor. The spill will be easier to clean when the gas cools down.

PostHeaderIcon How Interior Design Consultancies Use Lighting – Wall-washers and Decorative Lighting

Article by Interior Design London

Interior design consultancies understand light in all its forms. In London, lighting is crucial to interior design consultancies that need to create stunning results. In this, the penultimate article in my series which I call “DeLIGHTed by Design,” I continue to draw on my experience working with some of London’s Top Interior Design Consultancies to explain this exciting area.

In my previous article, I explained how six main lighting tools are considered foundational by established interior design consultancies. In this article, I will explain wall-washers and decorative lighting.

Wall-washers come as either recessed or surface-installed models. They are used by interior design consultancies to throw light uniformly along and over the top of a wall. In London, down-lighters and up-lighters are normally used to accentuate both verticals and horizontals; by contrast, wall-washers tend to throw light primarily onto vertical surfaces. Interior design consultancies will think of the wall as its own reflective surface in this context. The wall-washer provides a soft, warm ambient light if it features a frosted lens or a wide beam fixture. Alternatively, interior design consultancies in London sometimes use a narrow-beam model to create a powerful feature lighting fixture using a wall-washer. Location is critical. If recessed, the interior design consultancy can achieve a softly glowing effect, but if positioned close to the wall, attractive and imaginative half-moon kaleidoscopes of light can dance across the surface. Wall-washers are employed by interior design consultancies to accentuate textures, especially hewn old country wooden beams or red brick.

Decorative lighting is often used by interior design consultancies who work with traditional styles. Replica fixtures may be essential for authenticity, but in London these are often melded into more modern themes for added interest. For example, I have seen interior design consultancies position a historic oil lamp in a hallway together with concealed down-lighters off to either side for effect. The oil lamp served as a visual centrepiece, providing general omnidirectional illumination. But when the down-lighters were activated, the oil lamp could be dimmed, generating an engaging decorative effect. Another technique is to match table lamps with low-voltage focus lights, perhaps to highlight an historic skirting board. Professional interior design consultancies can create lighting schemes to reinterpret the style of an interior, while also benefiting from modern engineering options and efficiencies.

In the next and final article in this series “DeLIGHTed by Design,” I will finish by revealing how interior design consultancies use artificial light.

PostHeaderIcon Home Improvement – When is It a Wise Move?

Article by Canadian Home Find

Gone were the days, when the most logical move for homeowners was to go for upgrades when living space became too small. In the face of the recent tumultuous events that hit real estate markets, this alternative seems not to be an attractive one. In the current scheme of things, home improvement alternatives are the best and most practical options for most homeowners. A carefully planned home improvement project can deliver the desired results that we want to achieve. Financial companies offer loan packages for home improvement projects. There are even grants that you can avail if you are going for home improvement projects that integrate energy saving features.

Clear and present necessity and enhanced value are the two major reasons why you will opt for various kinds of home improvement projects. The scale and complexity of the makeover job will entirely depend on your requirements and preferences as well as your available budget. There are also other intangibles that come into play which makes home improvement a better alternative to home upgrade. In most instances, we develop a strong attachment to our community that moving becomes a difficult option. After a certain period of time, you become accustomed to your surroundings and develop your comfort zone. Under such condition, giving up your home for an upgrade may not be your best option.

While there are obvious downsides to home improvement alternatives, the returns of a well-executed home improvement project are more than enough to offset its negative effects. Expect a few weeks of inconvenience if you are planning to perform a home improvement project. However, you can mitigate the negative impact of the activity if you plan early.

Once you are able to hurdle the financial requisites of your home improvement project, the next thing that you must do is to plan out your project so that it doesn’t turn out to be a nightmare for you and your family. If you are intending to perform the task yourself, the logical first step will be to find the right home improvement software. This can help you visualize the changes and improvements that you want in your home before you commence the required home improvement tasks.

Once you have the right blueprint for your home improvement project, the next thing for you to do is to visit the local home improvement shops with the complete list of materials that you need. Make sure that you purchase the materials within the established budget by selecting materials with the best possible prices.

On the other hand, if you are inclined in hiring the services of a professional home improvement specialist, it is essential that you choose one who has the expertise, means and experience in performing the tasks required in your home improvement project. Home improvement is the current norm, and there are a lot of contractors that provide a broad range of specialties that focus on specific home improvement projects. It is essential that you hire one that can perform the task and deliver the results that you want to achieve in your home improvement project. It is not enough that you take into account the experience and track record of home improvement contractors. It is also critical that you consider the skill set of home improvement specialists that you will include in your short list of potential contractors. You may also consider the feedback or referral from relatives and friends in your search for the right contractor for the job.

Home improvement is a practical and interesting alternative in order for you to adapt to the changing needs of your family. However, you have to take things one step at a time to avoid turning the venture into a complete disaster.

PostHeaderIcon Is your garden Soil or Dirt

Article by garden.landscapiidr

Let us look at soil. To begin with, is it actually soil, or is it just dirt?

This makes an enormous difference.Plants grow in soil, not dirt.

Now, dirt, is just that, dirt – a bit of ground where very little has,or can be grown. This could be for myriad reasons. All those years ago,did Grandad decide that where the old incinerator used to be, would bea prime spot to put the new veggie garden? Having fires on top of itfor donkey’s years will have made this dirt. Sterile at that.

However, many things may have been grown and produced since then, butnot without the assistance of copious applications of water solublechemical fertilizer – or heaven forbid ‘superphosphate’. EEeekk!Probably looked like something out of one of those old 1960′s glossymagazines; razor sharp edges, newly turned beds showing bare earth, nota scrap of mulch to be seen – too messy! Strict rows of each individualcrop – no untidy mixing up of varieties.

Goodness! Things sure grew with a bit of the old ‘super’! Very true, but – chemical fertilizers make the cells of plants expand, to analmost a critical point. In this extended state, these cells are fullof water and/or air. So, the produce you are eating, is actually falsefood.Sort of like buying a loaf of bread that’s hollow.

The chemical fertilizers that appeared after world war two, were like’jack-and-the-bean-stalk’ stuff – so much less work than all thatmucking around, tilling the soil and getting dirty. And GAD’s, look at the SIZE of these things!!Well, no one could have know any better – this was the new modern worldwe were entering, where food was plentiful and cheap.

You can certainly eat this produce ( that’s what is in thesupermarkets), but as for calorific content, and actual sustenance – itis severely lacking. Part of this is due to the fact that the plant hasbeen ‘forced’, and hasn’t had the opportunity to take up the nutrientsand trace elements it actually needs for normal growth.Looks great, tastes bland.

Anyway, back to the soil. Grandad’s passed on and the next gardenerdecides to go organic. The first attempted crops will probably fail – small, stunted plantswithout any vitality; at the very least they are not going to look likeGrandad’s did. This is because the garden is just dirt. There is noexisting organic content to be had.

Sadly, this is where many would-be organic veggie growers chuck it in,naive to the fact that a bit of chicken manure, and a bit of mulch, areonly small elements of the whole picture. If Grandad had had some sortof conniption, and against all common reason, had decided to ‘goorganic’ one season, his plants would have all failed, if not diedoutright, without the contiguous application of the beloved solublefertilizer.

In order to have ‘soil’, as opposed to ‘dirt’, one must view the entiregarden as a living entity.A biomass, a biological mass of living interconnected and associatedentities; whether they be macro-organisms like worms and beetles,micro-organisms like bacteria and viruses, or fungi. An organic garden should be evolution on a molecular scale. The mulchand manure that were applied to one crop, including the remnants ofthat crop, now partly decomposed, become the base to initiate theevolution of the biomass.

Some bacterias, feeding on the spent plant material, will attractorganisms that feed on them and their debris, like fungi; which in turnattracts organisms that feed on fungi, whose debris then feeds thebacteria, again. As this molecular mass of waste, called seed compost, builds up with the subsequent applications of mulch, manures andplantings, other organisms are attracted also, nematodes, variousinsects, worms – all of which, in their turn are consumed by some otherorganism – adding to the mass.

Slowly, incrementally, the biomass builds, worms transport soil, bacteria and trace elements around the garden; deep-rooted plants plumbthe depths for trace elements, which are then deposited higher in thesoil as that plant decomposes, making these elements now more readilyavailable to other plants; in turn releasing them back into biomass forsome other organism.

The greater, or more evolved the biomass in soil becomes, the greaterthe number of plants that can be incorporated into the garden, and inturn returned to the soil, continuing the cycle.

Provided that a garden is added to with organic material, during andafter each crop, and re-planted with a diversity of plants and herbsfilling any spaces (no bare soil), it will only get better over time -like a stew.

An important rule to remember is – that which comes out of a garden, must be replaced, in some form. So, if you have just dug up all the potatoes, replace that crop with anequal weight of mulch and manure. Balance is what we are trying toachieve.

Interestingly, an organic garden never reaches critical mass. It isnever going to increase enormously in bulk, nor slowly encroach on yourhouse and attack you one night.A balanced organic garden has its own highs and lows, when one organismor element becomes too profuse, this then triggers a populationincrease in whichever organism feeds on it, and so on, until balance isre-established.

Having stated that critical mass is never reached, I should state thatrather, self perpetuation is reached instead. By this I mean that, whena good balance is reached, the garden produces enough raw plantmaterial, animal manures and debris, ultimately returned to the garden, that it perpetuates itself.

Yes, this is, initially, a lot of work, depending on your definition of’work’. However, the rewards are many; self satisfaction, for a start;healthy, ‘real’ food; exercise; a new found appreciation of the wonderof nature, to mention a few.

So, what is your garden? Soil, or Dirt?
